Potential Member Information
Welcome! The LSU Equestrian Team is a Sport Club within the University Recreation Department whose mission is to provide riders of all skill levels the opportunity to be competitive on a National level, while developing a strong sense of camaraderie between team members. Tryouts are held at the beginning of each Fall semester at which we are looking for dedicated, talented individuals whose athletic ability and personal attributes will strengthen LSU Equestrian as a team. Riders of all backgrounds and experience can find their niche within LSU Equestrian, and no prior riding experience is necessary to tryout! Regardless as to whether you are actively competing in Grand Prix events, or have only been on a trail ride, the most important attributes for a potential member are the motivation to improve as an individual athlete, and an eagerness to build lifelong memories through comradeship with potential teammates.
The LSU Equestrian Team competes within the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA). IHSA competition differs substantially from other equestrian events in that all horses and tack are furnished by the host college, and the events are judged solely on equitation (the riders’ style and skill). This competition format drastically reduces many of the costs normally associated with the equestrian sport by eliminating the need to transport horses to away competitions and also serves to even the playing field through a random draw format. For each class the riders draw from an assigned lot of horses and are not allowed to familiarize themselves with their horses prior to entering the show ring. To enter the ring “cold” on an unfamiliar horse adds a level of excitement and difficulty unique to intercollegiate equestrian competitions. Prospective members should be eager for the opportunity to advance their riding skills by learning how to adapt to a wide variety of horses.
If you become an LSU Equestrian Team member you will be expected to attend all scheduled practices, meetings, and fundraisers, as well as to participate in team activities such as community service. Dedicated team members are imperative to the continued growth and success of The LSU Equestrian Team, and by choosing to participate in mounted tryouts for the chance to become a part of the LSU Equestrian family you are confirming your intent to be an active team member who will uphold the ideals and values of LSU Equestrian and University Recreation.
Individuals interested in becoming a member of LSU Equestrian should start their journey by attending the mandatory informational meeting, which is held at the beginning of the Fall semester prior to mounted tryouts. The purpose of this meeting is to provide details regarding member responsibilities, and to fill out important paperwork required for mounted tryouts. Hopefully you have found this information helpful in your deliberation to join our team. If you have any questions, or would like to be added to our list of prospective members to receive updates on tryout dates etc, please contact us at [email protected]. We look forward to meeting all of our prospective members at tryouts!
